On Your Mark, Get Set, Spend It Like You Never Had It

    Friday, November 30th, 2007

Clothes are intimate gifts meant for only the best of friends and family. If Betty happens to know their size, someone very lucky will be getting a new sweater this year. That’s right, Theory is having a sample sale at Clothingline.com.

The official start date is December 3rd, but to their email subscribers, it begins Friday, November 30th. Fret not, Betties, you don’t need a special pass to get in, just knowing you can go is invitation enough. Betty will definitely be there shopping for herself and others.

Somehow, the guilt of spending her paycheck on clothes washes away when Betty remembers that some (and only some) of those goodies will make another person close to her happy.

    There’s a Mouse in Betty’s House

    Thursday, November 29th, 2007

    fitmouse.jpg

Nobody enjoys a disrespectful house guest - they eat your food, make a mess, invite guests over unannounced, and never chip in on the rent. Similarly, mice possess the uncanny ability to take over an apartment the way a sloppy college roommate does…thoroughly. Betty realized that there were two ways to stabilize and eventually eliminate these hairy creatures (the mice that is): the humane way and the way that works. Two hints about the way that works- its not pretty and its not humane (mice are not humans, one must remember.)

Betty still went for the humane solution first. She installed a buzzing device into an outlet closest to the site of the mice. The noise it caused was killer annoying. It just didn’t work. She then purchased an Eco-friendly mouse-deterring scented pouch. Every Betty out there can guess the probability of this pouch keeping the mice at bay….just no way.

Betty went old school. She bought a snap-trap. Avoid the sticky pads. What’s worse than sticking a live mouse to a super-adhesive piece of cardboard? That’s plain mean and then there is a live mouse to handle! After snapping her own hand, Betty set the traps and waited. In the meantime, she kept her apartment ultra clean with all food put away. Once the mouse was caught, she found a willing and eager man to clean up the mess. No Betty should ever clean dead mouse!

    I Want My Money Back

    Piggy Bank Repair

With lunch at 10 bucks a pop 5 times a week and a rent check that makes Betty tear every time she has to let it go, any bit of cash she can save is a gift from a higher being. That is why she has eliminated foreign ATM’s from her repertoire all together. With a plethora of stores offering cash back, even when she is far from her home bank, Betty is comforted in knowing that she got her cash without giving her money away.

CVS - offer $35 back with every purchase

Food Emporium - up to $100

Gristedes - amount depends on who you get at checkout

Duane Reade - No cash back yet, but fingers are crossed

Rock Tree Goes Green and Bling

    tree

You know you’re in New York when even a Christmas Tree is dressed in the latest trends. This year, the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree will host a 550-pound Swarovski Star (most glitter ever!) and will display energy saving lights (very inspiring!).

Tonight, 7 PM -9 PM, is the official lighting ceremony. Al Roker will host the celebrity show with performances by Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Barry Manilow, and Carrie Underwood. Although some may revel in this traditional yet kitschy event, Betty is not one to brave the crowds. Lucky for her, the tree will stay lit from 5:30 PM-11: 30 PM thru January 8th and can be admired while holiday shopping.

    Betty Goes Domestic

    Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Betty is not an award winning chef, nor does she claim to be. When she feels the desire to play domestic, she dons her favorite hot pink apron from Domistyle. Their aprons are fun and flirty. At $39 each, they make perfect hostess gifts, too! With the apron on, she doesn’t always feel the need to cook…just throws some cookie dough in the oven for effect.

Hudson Bar and Books: No Reading Required

    Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

After a week of obsessing over her outfits, spending an extra 10 minutes on her hair every morning and using the her best flirty eyes, Betty finally got the cute guy she had been running into at lunch to ask for her number. When he called to set up the date he said that he would come meet her, just name the place.

Hudson Bar and Books is the perfect place for a first date.  The lighting is dim and the small space romantic with cozy tables for two lining the wall. Drinks are expensive but the ambience is worth every penny.

Know if you go: The tiny space doubles as a cigar bar so don’t wear your newest frock….

    Supermarket Sweep

    Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Betty’s first NYC grocery trip was quite the adventure. After going to 3 different markets, she plodded down the street with enough pounds of groceries to feed the Biggest Loser Cast (before their TV diet). She thought she might at least be burning calories until her Lean Cuisines ripped through the plastic bags and she was on her hands and knees on 14th street (very traumatic)! Betty soon discovered that there were more civil ways to stock her refrigerator:

Fresh Direct: An extensive food shopping website that gives you a window of time for delivery.

Supermarket Delivery: Most supermarkets in Manhattan will home deliver the groceries after you shop (small fee required). Gristedes, Food Emporium, Citarella and Whole Foods all have these services that will allow you to pick out your bananas without the struggle home.

BYOB: If you enjoy the supermarket stroll and are only purchasing a limited supply, bring your own bag. Sturdy and earth-conscious, you can buy food and look fashionable at the same time. Betty’s favorite: the lightweight Envirosax.

    The Devil Wears Payless

    Patricia Field for Payless

Patricia Field, Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City costume designer extraordinare, is known for dressing her starlets in eclectic, albeit expensive wardrobe choices. While Betty attempted to channel the SATC/DWP energy as she dressed to go out, it was sometimes difficult to acheive the non-chalant fashionista “I threw my outfit together” look while still looking pulled together.

Patricia Field’s new capsule line for Payless, makes it easy (on your watch and your wallet). Choose from “Tempura” a 4 1/2 inch platform heel faux snakeskin shoe (Pat herself wore a version of these to the Oscars earlier this year), “Sushi” an intense (ok this item is a bit more stripper-y than Betty prefers) 4 1/2 inch platform shiny-heeled boot, or “Sake” - Betty’s personal fave- a sleek faux croc clutch, which in black looks way more expensive than the $25 it will run you.

Available now, online or at select stores nationwide:

    Darling: Fit for a Queen

    Monday, November 26th, 2007

    Marie Antoinette darling

When Betty first saw Marie Antoinette, her heart longed for the enchanted and extravagant engrossment that women once gave to their dresses (a garment that today has been out staged by jeans and wife beaters). Betty had just purchased a frock from edressme.com, an extensive website with great finds. But it lacked the frills and girlish excitement that can only derive from a proper dress shop.

On a recent shopping trip to the West Village, Betty spotted Darling, a delightful boutique brimming with charming dresses. The owner, Anne French Emonts, was a Broadway Costume Designer and the store made Betty feel as if she could play any character. Betty gushed at the romantic apparel, vintage pieces, femme lingerie, and costume jewelry. The affordable prices were icing on the cake. Amid the prim outdoor garden and attentive staff, Betty tried on dresses and felt like a Queen.
